About Me

.

I’m a foreigner (老外) learning Mandarin, and it’s rather confusing.

When did you start learning Chinese?

I started learning in January 2008 at University. At first I was intrigued, but then it became an obsession. Forward to now, and I’m still learning something new about Chinese everyday.

Why Chinese?

I had to choose a foreign language for course credit in University. I chose Mandarin over French, ’cause I’ve always had an interest in the East. The culture, the people, the politics. Also, Mandarin is a great assest to have if you are looking for career opportunities. Mandarin was then a no brainer.

Do you currently live in China?

Nope. I plan on going there after my University studies. I have gone to China twice though, once in June/July 2009 and then June/July 2011.

Why this blog?

It came about as I started following other Mandarin learning blogs. I’ve always blogged on other sites, but never focused on Chinese and language learning. In December 2009, Confused Laowai was born to help other learners of Chinese and to help keep track of my own learning levels. In addition to that, I like to share interesting Mandarin language content.

What are you doing currently?

I’m doing a Master’s Degree in Hypermedia for Language Learning at Stellenbosch University in South Africa in conjunction with the MIH Media Lab. My research involves looking at Chinese characters and finding better ways to learn them via technology. It is due for completion end of 2012 (hopefully!).

I’ve been learning Mandarin via Skype/WebEx lessons via 1-on-1 tutoring with tutors from Beijing on http://www.speakmandarin.com! It has been awesome and so convenient!

Ahhhhh i’m a fellow saffer at  复旦大学 and i’m confused as heck! it is comforting to know that there are people that have been learning the language for much longer and still continue to be confused. why don’t you come study here though? i think you would definitely find it easier to polish your skills, you can only get so far studying from a foreign country, as i’m sure you know…very rad to stumble on to ur website! afroshanghainese@gmail.com

    Hi,

nice to see a fellow South African also posting here. Glad you discovered my
blog. I did study for a brief summer school in 2009 in Beijing. But I’m
planning to go work in China after my Master’s degree. So then I’ll learn a
    lot more, I’m sure hehe.

How long have you been studying at Fudan? How many South Africans are there
    in Shanghai?

Accidentally saw your blog when I was searching some Mandarin materials for my foreign students, who are studying Mandarin with me now. I’d love to show my students your blog for courage and motivation if you don’t mind. 加油,不要放弃!=)

I have been looking for a blog like this and was so happy to find it in my roundabout way. Thanks! I’m looking forward to going to China again in December and need to brush up on my mandarin. I’ve forgotten so much since being back in the US.

    Hi there,

I want to study Mandarin fulltime.

Do you recommend China or in SA?

    Please advise.

    Many thanks

    Hi Gawie,

I would definitely recommend studying it in China. It is a lot easier being immersed in the language 24/7. It’s almost as if you are learning is automatic.
I studied Mandarin at Stellenbosch University, although it was great, nothing beats learning the language in the country itself.

    Good luck!

P.S. – If you go, please start a blog so I can follow your experiences. Always keen to read about people learning the language.
